Backup & Restore - FastTrek Docs

Save your FastTrek configuration to a file you can keep, move to another computer, or restore from later.

Backup/Restore Settings

Everything you have configured in FastTrek - your ships’ automation profiles, your schedules, what to collect in the refinery, your preferences - are stored on this computer. FastTrek does not transfer any settings to the ‘cloud’.

The Backup & Restore tab writes all of it to a single file, so you can keep a copy, move to a new machine, or go back to a previous working setup.

Making a backup

Tick the things you want to include, then click Export… and choose where to save the file.

FastTrek suggests fasttrek-settings.json. This is an ordinary text file (in JSON format) which you can keep in your documents, a cloud drive, or e-mail to yourself.

What you can include

ItemWhat it covers
Saved profilesYour profile library
Active profilesWhich profile/settings each ship is currently set to
Recent systemsList of recently used system names
SchedulesScheduled tasks and territory attendance
Refinery & collectionsWhat to refine, and your away team, faction store and gift selections
General settingsEverything else you have adjusted: timings, behaviour, evasion, shields, appearance

All of them are ticked by default.

What is never included

A few things are machine-specific and are always left out - you cannot tick them, and FastTrek refuses them even if they somehow appear in a file you were sent:

  • Licence information
  • Saved passwords
  • Window sizes and positions
  • Ship/Dock detection, which is measured from your screen
  • STFC/mod installation details

Restoring

Click Restore… and pick your backup file.

FastTrek reads it and shows you the contents. You can then select which parts to restore.

Merge or Replace

When restoring, this changes how the backup is loaded. It affects only the items you select to restore, nothing else.

The difference is in what happens to any existing settings you may already have.

Merge writes the backup over existing items and leaves everything else alone. Any current profiles, schedules, etc, you already have are kept.

Replace clears the ticked items first, so you end up with exactly and only what is in the backup.

For example:

Say you have profiles Grinding, Mining and Armada, and the backup contains Grinding and Borg:

  • Merge leaves you with Grinding (from the backup), Mining, Armada, and Borg
  • Replace leaves you with Grinding (from the backup) and Borg

Merge is the default, and is the right choice most of the time. Use Replace when you want to revert changes and leave nothing behind.

Afterwards

Restored settings take effect immediately without restarting FastTrek.

If the backup contained schedules or collection selections, the Settings window will close when the restore finishes. This ensures that you do not see any old outdated configuration.

Moving to a new computer

  1. On the old computer, tick everything and Export… to a file you can reach from both.
  2. Install and activate FastTrek on the new computer.
  3. Open Settings → Backup & Restore, click Restore…, pick your file, and tick everything it offers.

Your licence and ship detection are not part of the backup, so activate the new installation the normal way. Everything else can be imported.
